George Lehman Hines family collection, 1883-1983 [microform].

Chiefly scrapbooks (4 v.) containing the correspondence, legal documents, photographs, and printed materials belonging to the George Lehman Hines family. During the 1880s the Hines family came to Arkansas as teachers for the Sweet Home Colored School in Sweet Home, Pulaski County. The Hines family papers relate to George Lehman Hines and his descendants. Materials were collected by his daughter, Florence Hines Mattison, and his great granddaughter, Clara Hines Coleman.

Born in 1851 in Bowling Green, Ky., George Lehman Hines was the son of an Austrian/German born immigrant planter, George Lehman, and his Indian slave mistress, Jane Hines. As an emancipated slave, George L. Hines worked for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad until the age of 27. George left Bowling Green to attend school in Ohio.
